Do you think you are becoming crazy because you are hearing things all day long that nobody else hears? Do not worry; you are not going crazy. If you hear a ringing, buzzing, or whistling in one or both ears 24 hours a day and you have no break from it; you could have what is known as tinnitus.
Tinnitus is when a person hears a ringing, buzzing, or whistling anywhere in their head or one or both ears. It occurs 24 hours a day, and the person gets no break what so ever. This person is not crazy, and they have tinnitus. The more severe form of tinnitus would be a heartbeat like sound in the ear. This could mean an abnormal growth such as a tumor.
CAUSES
The most common cause of tinnitus is damage to the sensory hair cells in the inner ear. It is typically from the conventional ageing process and exposure to excessive noise. Other causes of tinnitus are head or neck injury, ear infections, a foreign object like ear wax touching the ear drum, tube issues, TMJ, traumatic brain injury, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Some medications can help cause tinnitus as well. Some medications are aspirin, ibuprofen, certain antibiotics, and diuretics. The last cause of Tinnitus is an abnormal growth.
TREATMENT
The first step in treating tinnitus is stopping all medications that might be harming the ear and if the person has TMJ start treatment for that. Other than doing this there is no relief. However, there are some things that can be done to help the person out. Some things that might help is relieving insomnia and anxiety, helping with social issues and hearing difficulties, and treating depression.

The person can also use sound therapy to help calm the noise. Sound therapy is when you use something soothing to calm you down. For instance, listen to classical music. Hearing aids are a type of sound therapy as well. Hearing aids will help amplify the sounds around the person. Hearing aids help redirect the noise. Sound therapy is only a temporary fix, though.
Tinnitus retraining therapy is another form of treatment. It is where you learn to forget about the music. The person goes to counselling and with their help the person wears an audible hearing device that plays white noise. By doing this the person forgets about the ringing, buzzing, or whistling that is happening.
PREVENTION
There may not be any true way to treat tinnitus, but there are ways to prevent it. Having a healthy lifestyle is one of them. Exercising, eating healthy, good sleep habits, not smoking, social life, and knowing how to manage stress are big ways you can prevent it from happening to you. Another way to prevent tinnitus is by using protection in noisy environments and use tinnitus masker hearing aid.
