Around 50 million Americans suffer hearing loss problems. The number continues to increase on a regular basis as it has become a common problem. For people suffering from hearing loss can use hearing aids to treat the problem. Unfortunately, most of these people simply choose to forgo this treatment for whatsoever reasons. Those who follow their audiologist’s advice and seek treatment for their loss can improve their ability to hear.  Studies have shown that hearing aids contribute to the improvement in the quality of life by improving the hearing ability.

What is a hearing aid?

A hearing aid is an electronic device (usually small in size) that you can wear in or behind your ears. Its work is to magnify or amplify the voice of the person wearing it. It doesn’t matter if you are in a noisy or quiet area, hearing aids can help you hear sounds loud and vibrant.

It consists of three constituents which include a microphone, an amplifier, and a speaker. The aid receives the voice via the microphone and the sound waves are then transformed into electric signals which get further transmitted to an amplifier. The amplifier goes ahead to end the messages to your ear through the speakers.

Hearing loss happens when the small sensory cells in the inner ear- known as the hair cells- become impaired. It usually occurs due to aging, injury from sound, disease, hereditary or harm caused by some particular medications.

The greater the damage to the hair cells- greater will be the hearing loss.

How ideal and suitable the hearing aid depends on a great range on the severity and kind of hearing loss problem. Therefore, your audiologist will help you choose the hearing aid that will be of great help to you and will suit your lifestyle.

One of the most common concerns associated with hearing aids is its price which is logical and should be taken into thought while purchasing any hearing device. Also, keep in mind that if one hearing device is expensive than the other, it does not necessarily mean that it is better. There are a lot of low-priced hearing aids available in the market today that may suit you and your lifestyle better than their expensive complements.

It is significant to note that a hearing device will not give your healthy hearing back but with continued use, your hearing aid will help to increase your receptiveness to noises and improve your hearing ability as well.

Take a notice of the following signs that will indicate a need for a hearing aid (If you are not sure about the hearing loss)

  • When people around you keep on faltering

The human hearing is in numerous pitches- low, medium and high pitch. If your hearing loss is between the high pitch range, speech becomes blurred and anyone talking to you appears to be faltering.

  • Although you hear people speaking, you cannot really comprehend what they are speaking about- Hearing another individual talking to you but not getting him/her. What you take a note of is that consonants and vowels don’t sound the same and for people with the ‘high pitch hearing loss’, hear the vowel sound of people talking to them. But they are not able to pick up consonants that easily. That is probably why you can hear people talking to you but you find it difficult to understand what they are saying.
  • People around you comment that you are having hearing problems- Your family and friends must be the ones who recognize your hearing problem since they are always fighting to converse with you. Usually, you don’t understand the problem until any other person points it out. So, giving attention to what your friends and family say about your hearing loss problems will point out whether you need an audiologist or not.
  • When you always say ‘what?’ or ‘sorry, please repeat’? – If you find yourself using these phrases more often than required, then you may be having hearing loss.
  • Are you above 65 years of age? – It is quite common to note that individuals who are 65 years old or above faces hearing loss problems. (But age alone is not a guarantee that will have hearing loss or any hearing issues.)

If you have been facing or noticing these symptoms, then this may be a strong indication that you have hearing loss problems. Avoid not to wait until your problem becomes severe and you lose your hearing completely.
